Why Yoga is So Good For You

Featured

Ask any Yoga freak, and they will tell you that there experience with the Indian practice is the best thing since vegan-friendly, organically produced sliced bread. One of the things that keep them so happy is the health benefits that coincide with being a yoga fanatic.

Basically, to be able to enjoy yoga a person does not need much. There is no equipment needed (though some cute yoga pants and a soft mat help). You don’t need to join a team and you can do it pretty much anywhere. It is a common misconception that a participant needs to be extremely limber and flexible. That is false, all they need is an open mind and bit of willingness.

The health benefits of practicing yoga come from all of the stretching and hoisting of your body that is involved. The basis from yoga is balance between tranquility of the mind and body; The exercises shouldn’t be too difficult for either. However, after your first few sessions, your muscles may feel the “burn,” and ironically it is a good idea to stretch before and after a session to make sure that no muscles are stretched improperly.

The unique movements in yoga, such as the Downward Dog pose, make the participant hold themselves up in ways that they wouldn’t experience say jogging around the block or lifting free weights. And, though it helps to have a competent instructor, many of the techniques are short and can be completed on your own. It’s a great way to wind down after a hard day at the office and can take the place of your normal gym routine.

Drink Up: Five Creative Ways to Get More Water

Featured

water with lemon

A little lemon can invigorate even the most drab water.

Drinking water is the healthiest way to keep ourselves hydrated. Whether you are losing weight, working out daily or trying to keep healthy habits, water is essential. Drink as much water as you can, and enjoy the benefits that come with it. Some people find water boring. If you are one of those people, here are some creative ways to increase your intake.

Start your day with a glass. I don’t know about you, but I wake up thirsty. This is because our bodies sweat during the night, and use many of our fluids to recharge. Before you reach for that cup of coffee, hydrate with a full glass of water.

Stick with water at restaurants. I love a diet soda or a sweet iced tea as much as you probably do, but restaurants are charging like $3 per drink these days. That’s outrageous! Save yourself some money and increase your water intake by skipping the soft drinks and ordering water. That way, your taste buds can concentrate on the food.

Keep it with you. Everybody loves the environment a little more these days, so invest in one of those reusable water bottles that are cool and metallic and flashy. Keep it filled with water, and take it with you everywhere you go. Bring it to meetings, school events, when you go for a walk and of course when you exercise. If you keep your water within arm’s reach, you’ll be reaching for it more often.

Eat your fruit. Many of your favorite fruits are high in water. Bite into some watermelon, eat a handful of grapes or peel an orange. Not only are you getting a lot of fiber and vitamins, you are increasing your water intake as well.

Add a little something. Some people are adding flavor to their water to make it a little more appealing. Get a few packets and keep them with you so you can make your water pretty and tasty. Or squeeze some lemon into a glass. Add something fancy, if you want, like thin slices of cucumber.

Controlling Your Road Rage

New York City

Big cities like New York City are where road rage is most likely to occur.

You have laid on the horn, flipped someone the bird, and cursed under your breath so the kids don’t hear. It’s called road rage, and if you think you got it bad you should hear about the time someone pulled a gun on my aunt because she waved with one finger. There are enough distractions, satellite radio, cell phones, kids, food and drink, even other drivers, the last thing you need to concentrate on is who isn’t going fast enough or who slowed down at a yellow light. P.S. that is what you are supposed to do. So, how do you control your temper behind the wheel or at least muffle it enough to arrive alive. Continue reading
